About Department of Chemistry, Kyushu University

The Department of Chemistry was initiated in 1939 when the Faculty of Science was founded in Kyushu University.After several phases of expansion and restructuring, the current form was established in the year of 2000.Our department covers a broad range of chemistry dealing with atoms, molecules, molecular complexes and assemblies, polymers, giant molecules, and biological systems. Our research subjects range from fundamental problems in chemistry to problems for applications in the fields of coordination chemistry, inorganic synthesis, organometallic chemistry, nano-materials chemistry, quantum chemistry, molecular spectroscopy, surface and interface chemistry, soft-matter chemistry, biophysical chemistry, organic synthesis, catalytic reactions, bioorganic chemistry, bioanalytical chemistry, molecular and cellular biochemistry, structures and functions of biological systems, geochemistry, radiochemistry, theoretical chemistry, computational chemistry, and so on. The studies in these fields are advanced by our 40 faculty members. Education of graduate and undergraduate students is further promoted in collaboration with the Institute for Materials Chemistry and Engineering, the Faculty of Arts and Science, the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research, and the Central Institute of Radioisotope Science and Safety Management.

The undergraduate school offers more than 30 lecture courses that cover an almost complete range of chemistry including inorganic, organic, physical, analytical, structural, and biological chemistry. The lecture courses are complemented by corresponding basic experimental courses offered for sophomore and junior students. Senior students join one of the research groups, start laboratory activities for learning practical techniques for research, and are finally qualified as a bachelor by an oral examination on their achievement. Most of the students proceed to a graduate school for advanced research experiences in chemistry.

The graduate school offers research opportunities in a variety of areas of chemistry covered by our research subjects mentioned above. The objective is to develop intellectual creativity through research activities in their specialized field. The requirements for obtaining a graduate degree are creative-thinking skills, problem-pursuit skills, and problem-solving skills rather than simply learning in classes. Students are requested to acquire such skills and knowledges through academic interaction with their supervisors. A regular term for the Master’s course is two years. Master’s degrees are awarded by the Graduate School on the basis of the oral examination on their thesis presentation. The doctoral course is offered for further research training toward a professional scientist. It intends to produce experts in each research field with advanced knowledge and creativity as well as with sophisticated technical skills. Students are qualified as a Doctor of Science after the thesis defense. Our graduate school provides a center for innovative education and research fostering experts in chemistry who will play a leading role in the world.
